The simplicity of the composition and the reduced palette of colors are the reasons for the power of this picture. The diagonal lines of the ladder lead the eyes up diagonally through the jagged stairs, then follow the horizontal line, and drop back to the bottom to start the loop once again. These 3 lines create a trap for the eyes to stay inside the frame.
